Kākānui Marae Wharenui Rebuild
Client: Kākānui Marae Trustees
Dates: February 2021 – December 2021
Value: $500,000
This project involved subfloor deconstruction, reframe, re-roof, new ceiling, installation of heat pumps, rewire new electricals, new exit doors (fire safety), new joinery, concrete pathways, base, new facial, new soak holes, new carpet, painting and new timber (replaced, re-oiled).
It was anticipated to be delivered in four months, however once work commenced, it was found that there was an infestation of borer required a total rebuild of the kitchen.
The client was consulted along the way and able to make informed decision on the best way to use the allocated budget and revised project completion date. The client was very satisfied with the final project, especially given the challenges faced with a much larger project needing to be completed than initially thought.
They felt they received excellent value for money and something marae users would love. A unique feature of this project was the remoteness of the marae. The logistical challenges this presented, not only with getting plant, materials and supplies on site, but also finding people to do the work, meant Xcel had to be creative around finding solutions.
The marae offered to make some land available to build trade accommodation to house workers, known as ‘Tewhare Waihaga’.
This became, and still is, a ‘nerve center’ of operations in the region.
