Ngahina Marae Kitchen Rebuild

Clients: PGF, DIA and TPK, Marae Trustees
Dates: November 2019 – July 2021
Value: $1.5 Million

Xcel was the Principal Builder and Project Manager for this marae redevelopment project.

Initially, the scope included a major kitchen re-build including plumbing, gas works, drainage, roofing, installation of commercial kitchen equipment and solar hot water system to enable it to operate off the grid.

Additional funding was secured to provide additional scope of work:

  • Major property works: Landscaping, renovations of carvings, repaint of wharenui, marae boundary shelters, fences, concrete pathways, makeover of the ablutions, rebuild of diving hall ceiling, installation of AC system in dining hall, renovation of conference / office room.
  • Digital Connectivity Project: Delivered as part of a government initiative which involved providing hardware (satellite dishes, TV, routers etc.) to achieve full wireless capability.

Initially scheduled for 12 months, COVID-19 lockdowns and subsequent delays in securing building materials from offshore meant the team at Xcel had to maximise all opportunities to deliver as close to the original delivery date as possible.

Xcel achieved code of compliances required for this project and the client was exceptionally happy with the end project as it exceeded their expectations in both functionality and aesthetics.

Health and safety performance on the job was excellent with no harm incidents taking place. Coordination of all subcontractors went smoothly, a considerable achievement given the challenges presented by supply chain, Covid and lockdowns.

Xcel was able to demonstrate their ability to be agile in an environment that required flexibility and empathy for factors beyond their control.
